Meet Daniel O'Rourke, Superintendent of Public Works

Dan ORourke

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Maywood, NJ

When did you start working for the Borough of Pompton Lakes?

I started working in the Borough of Pompton Lakes in February 2018

What are your primary duties?

My primary duties are to make sure garbage and recycling is scheduled and collected, do maintenance of the roadways, the removal and/or trimming of trees as well as the scheduling, snow plowing and ice control on the roadways, and to maintenance and cleaning of all the borough properties and parks. Lastly it is also maintaining the budget and making sure equipment is kept up to a good standard.

What do you think people don't know about the Department of Public Works, in addition to your job, specifically, that you could share?

A lot of people have a very large misconception about DPW workers. Many people think we are just the garbage collectors, but in reality we do much more than collect garbage. We are the guys and gals who also do many other projects around town.

Did you always see yourself working in borough government, or in government in general?

To be honest I would have to say that yes I did. I had seen myself doing work in some way for local or state government.

How do you see the Borough of Pompton Lakes as a place to live and to work?

Pompton lakes is a beautiful and fun little town. Pompton also has a great downtown and holds some great events for its residents in the downtown area. Not to many towns hold events like this. It is a great way to bring the residents together.

Pompton Lakes is a great town to work in. The people are very understanding and easy to work with when it comes to problems that we face.

I know that all DPW workers are hard and dedicated workers for the town, and all are unsung heroes. What could you tell me about the DPW employees that work for the Borough?

The DPW workers are a great bunch of guys and gals. They care about getting the job/s done so that the residents do not have to worry. They put in the extra time on the weekends and during the week nights when needed to get certain emergency jobs done. Along with the town events that they need to be there to make sure everything is cleaned up and ready to go for the next day.

What are your hobbies, interests?

My biggest hobby/interest is playing men’s slowpitch softball. I play on a very competitive tournament team that travels the country to play other teams from other states and also countries. My teams have traveled to Canada, to Florida, and to Las Vegas just to name a few places. I always played sports growing up and loved the competitive feeling I get when I step onto a field to play an opponent. Plus this has given me the opportunity to meet so many different people from different walks of life and that is what I enjoy the most about it.

And anything else you'd like to say, or any new programs that the DPW has?

As of right now we don’t have any new big programs coming up but we are looking into more ways to increase our recycling and lowering our waste rate.

Story written by Michael Carelli, Public Information Officer. Thanks to Dan O'Rourke for the interview!
